Bio
Adam Smith joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in June 2021 as an innovative nuclear reactor development engineer. He supports the manufacturing and deployment of advanced nuclear technologies within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division. Adam is currently working on the US ITER project to build the world’s largest tokamak fusion reactor. Additional programs he supports include nonproliferation, safeguards, and security for advanced nuclear systems.
Prior to joining ORNL, Adam came from Westinghouse Electric Company where he spent the last 15 years in various engineering and project management positions. A certified project management professional (PMP), Adam has experience in leading major programs with a background in seismic and environmental testing, instrumentation and control systems, and nuclear fuel manufacturing and development. Adam also worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 5 years supporting nuclear weapon stockpile life extension programs.
Adam earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology from the Pennsylvania State University in 2001 and Master of Science in Engineering Mechanics from the New Mexico Technical Institute of Mining and Technology in 2006.
