Scientific Achievement: A protic ionic salt based organocatalyst, triazabicyclododecane:trifluoracetic acid (TBD:TFA), was newly designed to sequentially and selectively deconstruct multiple condensation polymers that can be applied to the majority of existing mixed plastics today.
Significance and Impact: The developed selective deconstruction of mixed plastics offers a critical step toward closed-loop circularity of plastics and carbon neutrality.
