Abstract

Neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction were used to study the texture development in the nickel-based superalloys over three levels of gauge volumes from hundreds of cubic millimeters down to several cubic micrometers. The coordinated synchrotron microbeam experimental investigation shows local deformation unlike that of the bulk. The bulk averaged results show a uniform texture development from collective slip. However, the plastic deformation within a single grain is mediated by limited slip, as evidenced by the local strain distribution. Through a kinematic approximation, simulated Laue patterns are compared with microbeam-diffraction experimental results, which show several distinct structural zones even in the same grain. The possible reasons of this observed structural evolution are discussed.
