Abstract

Process cooling and HVAC systems, including rooftop units (RTUs), chillers, and air handlers, are essential to manufacturing plants, commercial buildings, and data centers, and their use continues to expand. Over a typical 15–20 year service life, a single unit can generate several tons of waste across manufacturing, installation, operations and maintenance, mid-life repairs, and decommissioning. This Waste Reduction Network Tip of the Month presents succinct, actionable strategies to minimize that waste while improving operational efficiency. The document characterizes the material composition of a typical 10-ton RTU, showing that roughly 75% of its mass, dominated by ferrous and nonferrous metals, compressors, and motors, is recyclable, with the recyclable fraction rising for larger equipment. It then maps the waste streams and approximate quantities associated with each of the five lifecycle phases, from packaging and offcuts at installation to spent filters, used oil, and refrigerant top-ups during operation, and recovered metals, refrigerant, and insulation at end of life. The core of the report is a ranked set of 25 practices organized around three critical waste streams: used oils, refrigerants, and solid materials. Practices are rated by waste reduction impact and asset life benefit, and emphasize leak detection and monitoring, condition-based oil and refrigerant changes, certified remanufacturing and parts harvesting, lifecycle-based procurement, sensor-driven predictive maintenance, and certified recycling partnerships. Together, these approaches reduce landfill waste, recover economic value, extend asset life, and lower total cost of ownership.
