Abstract

The FCRD project on Advanced Materials Development evolved in FY2010 from merging the INERI and GNEP projects at ORNL into one project with a strong focus on developing the 14YWT Nanostructured Ferritic Alloy (NFA) for advanced fuel cladding technologies. The primary objective of the INERI project was to enhance the mechanical properties database and to investigate the deformation behavior, including creep, fracture toughness and orientation effects, of the 14YWT alloy. The objective of the GNEP project was to improve the mechanical alloying processing method to enhance the production of large heats of 14YWT in order to conduct the necessary fabrication and joining studies that will enable this alloy to be used in fuel cladding applications.
