Multiscale Quantum and Classical Microscopy for Superconducting Quantum Systems

Lawrie project ERKCK51

The overarching goal of this project is to advance new quantum sensing modalities capable of revealing the effects of disorder in quantum materials and devices. Doing so will help to establish a virtuous feedback loop: novel quantum sensors will probe how disorder influences device performance and the resulting insights will drive the design of next-generation quantum technologies. In pursuit of this goal, three objectives are defined: (1) enhance quantum sensing performance by understanding and mitigating the effects of dissipation and decoherence, thereby achieving measurement sensitivities inaccessible to classical techniques; (2) probe the role of defects and disorder in superconducting quantum devices using complementary quantum sensors in operando, providing direct insights into their impact on device behavior; (3) develop new platforms for quantum state transduction leveraging coherent spin/photon/phonon interactions.
