The Oak Ridge Middle School Science Academy is a research-based, hands-on learning experience for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grader students and is held at ORAU’s Center for Science Education. The Science Academy exposes students to science in the real world through hands-on research, with the objective being to increase their interest in science, science courses, and careers. Mentors may serve as speakers and/or conduct tours.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
• be between 12-14 years old at the time of program start
• be a student in a public school in the Appalachian Region

• One-week residential program conducted at ORAU’s Center for Science Education in Oak Ridge, July 16-21, 2017
Program Provisions
• The Academy is provided at no cost to the participant.
Application Information
• Applicants apply to their home state ARC office, and recommendations are made by the State’s ARC Representative to the ARC federal office
• The ARC Education Program Manager makes the final selections
• Applications typically open in November or December and close in February

Requirements for Completing the Program
Participants must:
• prepare and present their work for an audience of peers, family, ORAU, ORISE, and ORNL officials
