Small Angle Neutron Scattering

Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) is used to measure structures in virtually any material, ranging from dilute solutions to dense solids over length scales from 1 to >100 nm. Four SANS instruments are available to users at ORNL: General Purpose Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Diffractometer (GP-SANS), Biological Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument (BIO-SANS), Extended Q-Range Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Diffractometer (EQ-SANS), and Ultra-Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument (USANS).

  • HYSPEC Measures excitations in small single crystals with optional polarization analysis
  • SEQUOIA Dynamics of complex fluids, quantum fluids, magnetism, condensed matter, materials science

Chemical Spectroscopy Suite

  • BASIS Dynamics of macromolecules, constrained molecular systems, polymers, biology, chemistry, materials science
  • NSE SNS-NSE is an ultrahigh resolution neutron spectrometer for characterizing the slow dynamics of soft condensed matter.
  • VISION Vibrational dynamics in molecular systems, chemistry
