Nuclear Systems Technology

ORNL has had historic involvement in a broad set of nuclear research areas: irradiated materials and isotopes R&D, fission and fusion reactors development, neutron scattering, fuel enrichment, used fuel recycling and disposal, etc. The skills and knowledge required to succeed in these research areas often cultivated core areas of expertise in which ORNL is currently engaged globally to solve challenging issues associated with nuclear systems design, analysis, operations, and safety. For example, ORNL has been engaged internationally in developing and implementing unique solutions to remote handling problems at accelerator facilities, fuel recycle facilities, and fusion test facilities. ORNL’s integrated expertise in understanding the components and technology of the nuclear fuel cycle positions us to help in evaluating advanced fuel cycle strategies and in leading national efforts to provide solutions for storage and transportation of used nuclear fuel.
