With the Spallation Neutron Source rapidly progressing toward its 2006 completion, SNS staff members will provide the public with an opportunity to visit and learn about the project Friday, April 2.
The open house will last from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. at the project office at 701 Scarboro Road, Oak Ridge.
This year's theme is "SNS: On Target!" The open house will emphasize rapid progress of construction during the past year. In addition, information will be available about the overall U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science project, including construction of the facility; environment, safety and health performance; accelerator systems; and SNS science and instrumentation. The public also will have a chance to learn about employment possibilities.
SNS is an accelerator-based neutron source that will provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world. The facility will be used for scientific research and the development of a variety of industrial materials.
Six DOE national laboratories -- Argonne, Brookhaven, Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge -- are collaborating on the design and construction of the facility. ORNL is managing the partnership and is integrating each of the respective laboratories' contributions into the facility. ORNL is ultimately responsible for operating the SNS.
As is the case with other DOE user facilities, SNS will be accessible to scientists and engineers from universities, industries and government laboratories in the United States and abroad. The SNS is scheduled for completion in 2006.
