Carolyn Krause has been elected an associate fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). Krause is editor of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Review at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

She will be honored at an awards banquet during the STC Annual Conference in April in Washington, D.C. Krause will be recognized for her "outstanding contributions to communicating scientific information and to the advancement of scientific journalism" and her contributions to STC and its East Tennessee Chapter.

STC is an international society of 15,000 professional technical writers, editors, computer documentation specialists, and other communicators of technical information.

Since 1975 Krause has served as staff writer and then editor of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Review, an internationally circulated quarterly magazine that describes research results and technology developments at ORNL. She also writes science news releases. She previously worked as a science reporter for The Oak Ridger and as a columnist and feature writer for the Pittsburgh Press.

Krause was STC Chapter Public Relations Competition manager for two years. For the East Tennessee Chapter, she has served as president, vice president, publicity manager, newsletter co-editor, secretary, and membership manager. While she was president in 1991, the East Tennessee Chapter won the Chapter Achievement Award, the Award of Outstanding Performance for Chapter Public Relations Program, and the Award of Excellence in its category in newsletters.

While she was publicity manager, the chapter received four additional Awards of Outstanding Performance for Chapter Public Relations Program. For her efforts, she received an STC Distinguished Chapter Service Award in 1993.

Krause won two Best of Show Awards for the Review in STC's East Tennessee Chapter Public Relations Competition. At the international level, the Review has received three STC awards in the house organ category - "distinguished" in 1978 and "excellence" in 1982 and 1984. She has received three international STC awards for Review articles, including a distinguished award.

Krause holds a bachelor's degree in English from the College of Wooster in Ohio, a master's degree in teaching English from the University of Pittsburgh, and a master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University.

Krause lives with her husband, Herb, in Oak Ridge. They have two children.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
