May 10, 2006 — Oak Ridge High School student Jana Elisabeth Black has received the 2006 UT-Battelle Scholarship worth up to $20,000.
Black, the daughter of Dr. William J. and June Black of Oak Ridge, is described by instructors at ORHS as an "extraordinary young mathematician" who has pursued a rigorous academics curriculum that includes eight advanced placement courses. She has studied at the Tennessee Governor's School for the Humanities and has taken community college coursework in public speaking and psychology.
The ORHS senior is active in the student council, Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and track and field. She received the President's Student Service Award for more than 100 hours service at local elementary schools and works with the Oak Ridge Children's Museum.
The UT-Battelle scholarship is a competitive award presented annually to the child of an employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The scholarship is awarded in $5,000 annual increments over a four-year period to an outstanding graduating high school student who plans to study science, mathematics or engineering at the University of Tennessee.
Black plans to enter UT this fall to pursue coursework in chemical engineering. Her father is a member of ORNL's Health Services Division.
UT-Battelle manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy.
