Scientific Achievement
The mobility of the native ion species is directly manipulated by seeding chlorine ions (Cl-) or [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)into grain boundaries of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs).
Significance and Impact
Tuning the mobility of ions in HOIPs grain boundaries controls these materials’ electronic properties, and may render them useful for memristor applications.
Research Details
– Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations derive a fundamental mechanism for Cl- segregation into grain boundaries (GBs).
– Electron microscopy and a novel band-excitation Kelvin probe force microscopy (BE-KPFM) measure the ion migration, showing significant enhancement or suppression by introducing mobile Cl− ions or PCBM, respectively, into GBs.
