ORNL's Buildings Technology Center is the premier U.S. research facility devoted to the development of technologies that improve energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of residential and commercial buildings. It is a designated national user facility with facilities available to manufacturers, universities and other organizations for proprietary and nonproprietary research and development.
In Kirby's new position, he will manage the power system technology program. He has been senior researcher in the program since 1994. During the 19 years prior to that, he worked in the Uranium Enrichment, Electrical Engineering and Small Computing sections at Lockheed Martin Energy Systems in Oak Ridge. He has won several corporate awards for his work.
He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from Lehigh University and is a member of the International Electrical Engineering Society. He and his wife, Melody, are residents of West Knoxville.
ORNL is a DOE multiprogram research facility and is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
