Joe Culver Appointed Manager of Public Affairs, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Jan. 4, 1994 – Joe Culver has been appointed Manager of Public Affairs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Most recently, Culver has been manager of public affairs for the Martin Marietta Energy Systems Office of Technology Transfer. He joined the Energy Systems public affairs organization in 1987.

A native of Wickliffe, Ky., Culver received the doctorate of jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee in 1982. He has worked as a reporter, editor and columnist for several newspapers, including The Oak Ridger, The Lexington (Ky.) Leader, The Rhea County News, The Paducah Sun-Democrat, and The Cairo (Ill.) Evening Citizen. Culver provided extensive coverage in The Oak Ridger of ORNL's role in recovery of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor in 1979.

He served as a journalist with the U.S. Army and Navy. He has also practiced law in Shelbyville, Tenn.

Culver's community activities include the Boys Club of Oak Ridge, Aid to Distressed Families of Anderson County, and Y-Indian Guides.

Culver and his wife, the former Judy V. McDaniel, live in Oak Ridge.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is one of the Department of Energy's multiprogram national research and development facilities. It is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
