Diefendorf President-Elect of Tennessee Section of American Institute of Professional Geologists

Hydrogeologist Andrew Diefendorf, of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), located at Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Ground Water Program office, has been named president-elect of the Tennessee Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). He will assume the role of president in 1996.

The purpose of AIPG is to promote the geological sciences as a profession. The institute establishes ethical standards to protect the public from nonprofessional practices, monitors governmental and other activities affecting the geological sciences and communicates the importance of geologic matters to the public.

Diefendorf joined ORNL in 1994 after more than 20 years as an environmental consultant with private sector firms in Wisconsin and upstate New York. Before joining ORNL last year, Diefendorf had been president of the Wisconsin section of the AIPG.

He holds a bachelor's degree in geology from Syracuse University and a master's from the University of Missouri.

Diefendorf and his wife, Jinx, live with their son, Aaron, in Oak Ridge.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, a Lockheed Martin company, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
