The contract was awarded to Blaine Construction Company of Knoxville. The construction manager for the project is Knight/Jacobs Joint Venture. The contract is scheduled to run for 276 calendar days from the issuance of the Notice to Proceed. ORNL officials expect work to begin May 8.
The Front End building is a 10,000 sq. ft. structure, and the Linac tunnel is 14 ft. wide, 10 ft. high and 1,055 ft. long. Follow-on contracts on these buildings will complete these facilities as well as add utilities. This will make it possible to begin installation of the accelerator components scheduled for the fall of 2002.
The SNS is an accelerator-based neutron source that will provide the most intense pulsed-neutron beams in the world. The facility will be used for scientific research and development of a variety of industrial materials. The $1.4 billion research facility is scheduled to be completed in 2006.
