Cobb named development staff member in ORNL Office of Computing and Network Management

Dr. John W. Cobb has been named a development staff member in the Office of Computer and Network Management at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

His responsibilities include scientific computing, computer planning, technology transfer and program development.

Cobb was previously a postdoctoral research associate in fusion energy with Oak Ridge Associated Universities and a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas. He has also been a visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and a programmer with Schlumberger Well Services in Austin, Texas.

He has memberships in the American Physical Society, American Vacuum Society and Metals Research Society.

Cobb earned bachelor's degrees in physics, math, science and technology studies from Michigan State University and a doctorate in computational plasma physics from the University of Texas.

He and his wife, Lynda, reside in Knoxville. Cobb is a volunteer for Recording for the Blind in Oak Ridge.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
