Aberrated Electron Probes Detect Magnetic Ordering with Atomic-Scale Resolution

Scientific Achievement

Customized aberrated probes are used to obtain chiral dichroic signals in materials via electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in STEM with high spatial resolution.

Significance and Impact

A novel approach to measure magnetism in materials has been developed that can be used to detect single atom magnetic moments.

Research Details

–An atomic-size aberrated electron probe was used to detect the antiferromagnetic ordering of Mn moments in LaMnAsO by observing a dichroic signal in the EELS Mn L-edge.

–Density functional theory calculations were performed using an all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane-waves method implemented in WIEN2k.
