The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) is a DOE Office of Science Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) program that brings full-time faculty — with a focus on institutions historically underrepresented in STEM research — to a DOE national laboratory for a funded, collaborative summer research experience.
At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, VFP faculty team with ORNL scientists and engineers on a research project of mutual interest, gaining access to world-class facilities and expertise that strengthen their research competitiveness and enrich the STEM learning they bring back to students. Faculty may invite up to two students to join the project, one of whom may be a graduate student.
VFP offers two tracks: Research Collaboration, open to all eligible faculty with no prior lab collaboration required, and the Teaching Initiative Track, for returning VFP participants developing new course content, modules, and learning resources tied to DOE mission areas. Both run as a 10-week experience during the summer and require a research proposal co-developed with an ORNL collaborator at the time of application.
