Interns work alongside ORNL attorneys and legal staff and engage with OGC clients while learning how legal services support a world-class research institution. The internship provides exposure to a wide range of practice areas, including procurement, ethics, export control, data privacy, and labor and employment.

Intern responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting legal memoranda, managing multiple assignments and deadlines, incorporating attorney feedback, and codeveloping and delivering a 15–30-minute presentation to senior staff on a legal topic selected with the intern’s mentor. The experience also includes a final evaluation and feedback at the end of the term.

Interns benefit from insight into in-house counsel practice and learn about ORNL’s scientific mission through opportunities such as tours of its leading research user facilities.
