Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists Community College Internship (CCI) program is a Department of Energy Office of Science initiative that provides community college students paid, hands-on technical experiences at DOE national laboratories. The program is designed to strengthen the nation’s energy workforce by engaging students in projects aligned with DOE mission priorities.

Clarice Phelps and Samuel Wester pose together before beginning a summer internship assignment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, CCI participants are embedded within research and operational teams contributing to mission-driven work across computing, advanced materials, energy systems, neutron sciences, nuclear science and engineering, and national security. Students gain hands-on experience with advanced instrumentation, large-scale user facilities, and cutting-edge computational resources while learning from engineers and technical professionals.

CCI at ORNL appointments are paid, full-time 10- (summer) to 16-week (spring and fall) experiences. These opportunities provide structured mentorship and technical skill development tailored to community college pathways.
