Student Placement
MDF hosts more than 100 students each year in paid positions. Students from undergraduate to doctoral levels are integrated into teams and actively work on projects with industry collaborators. Interested students are encouraged to research the teams working at MDF and reach out to staff members to inquire about opportunities. Additionally, students are encouraged to work with their faculty advisor to connect with MDF and find opportunities.

SM2ART Summer REU program
Each summer, MDF partners with the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center through the SM2ART program to host a cohort of students for three months focused on composites and related advanced manufacturing research. Students from universities nationwide are encouraged to apply for consideration.
Faculty Engagement
MDF works with more than 50 academic institutions nationwide, merging the capabilities of their faculty, students, and facilities with ORNL’s staff and facilities to collaborate on a range of multi-year programs and projects.
Workshops and other activities also allow meaningful engagement to discuss and share the latest state-of-the-art technologies, processes, and findings for mutual benefit.
Faculty interested in collaborating are encouraged to connect with MDF staff in the relevant areas of research focus.
