Capability Summary

Researchers are working closely with the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL to perform fundamental research that delves into the behavior of metals used in a variety of advanced manufacturing processes. A strong focus is placed on the microstructure of materials and how that structure can be altered to develop new attributes. The fundamental understanding of interactions between materials and processing is utilized by the researchers to develop new materials that are suitable for different advanced manufacturing techniques. Researchers are exploring the use of dissimilar metals to create new materials solutions that utilize advanced manufacturing techniques and the use of X-ray diffraction during active printing to understand behavior of materials during production. Testing can be performed at very high temperatures and vacuums.
