Bio
Viswadeep Lebakula, currently working as a R & D Associate Research Scientist in human Geography group in the Geospatial Science and Human Security Division within National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). His research focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, and optimization methods to aid vulnerable populations. His research helps to identify veterans at high risk for suicide, develop models to estimate populations at-risk at granular resolution, and analyze cancer and cardiovascular mortality across the United States. He is currently leading LandScan Global project that provides population estimates at ~1 square km worldwide. Also, he is serving as the technical lead for MEGA-DC program that is aimed at minimizing the impact of large energy loads on consumers and enhancing the resilience of the nation’s electric grid. These efforts utilize diverse datasets related to satellite imagery, remote sensing, energy grid, mortality and health records, to generate actionable insights and inform decision-making. In TASTI-GRID project he is working on spatio-temporal analysis of economic cost of power outages which can help policy makers with the grid investment decisions. In EDGAR project he is leading the development of EnQuery tool, which is based Generative Artificial Intelligence for energy affordability, reliability and resiliency. He is leading the development of machine learning models that identify the U.S. veterans that are higher risk of suicide which can be used by the Veteran Affairs to provide care and prevent the suicide attempts and deaths. His research is part of the projects that are funded by the United States federal agencies such as the Department of the Defense, Veteran Affairs, and the Department of Energy. He received Ph.D., and MS degrees in computer science from Mississippi State University and the University of Central Missouri respectively. Before his graduate studies, he worked as an assistant systems engineer at Tata Consultancy Services.
