Quality Representative/Engineer

Rex Veach, Jr. is a Technical Staff Consultant in the Performance Analysis and Quality Group within the Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). His research interests include: determination of customer expectations, configuration management, system/process analysis and improvement, identification and analysis of critical performance metrics, trend analysis, precious metals management, inspection and surveillance planning, nonconformance processing, root cause analysis, commitment management, and performance assessment.

Mr. Veach has worked in the quality field for 41 years. Most of his career has been in the tier 2 automotive market. He started out as a Quality Inspector performing 100% inspection of product, receiving inspection, and final inspection. He then progressed to the Quality Auditor position, which included such tasks as auditing of the processes, destructive/non-destructive testing, statistical process control (SPC). Mr. Veach worked into a layout technician position using the coordinate measuring machine to measure key characteristics to determine fit, form and function. He was promoted to a Quality Engineer position that included performing advanced product quality planning, measurement systems analysis, design/process failure modes and effects analysis, control plans, production part approval process, quality management systems, SPC, lean manufacturing, corrective/preventive action, and gage calibration.

Rex accepted a Quality Manager’s position at an aluminum chemical/electrical processing plant for the capacitor foil market utilizing the above skills. Rex is a Quality Representative/Engineer – currently supporting the Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) Special Component Manufacturing and Testing Program within the Materials Science and Technology Division. The RPS Program at ORNL has a nearly 50-year history of materials development (refractory metal alloys and carbon bonded carbon fiber) and the fabrication of unique components for the Department of Energy, NASA and other government agencies. Mr. Veach has authored a number publications on the subject of quality assurance for the RPS Program.
