Gary W Lynn

Section Head, Sample Environment & Labs

Gary Lynn received his PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2000.  He was a postdoc in the Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CSMB) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) working on new Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) instruments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).  He then became a staff scientist in the CSMB in 2004.  In 2008, Gary became the HFIR Instrument Operations Group Leader responsible for work activities on the neutron scattering instruments at HFIR.  He then served as the combined HFIR and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Sample Environment Group Leader from 2014 to 2020.  In 2020, he became the Section Head for Sample Environment and Labs.  This section is responsible for developing techniques, capabilities and operating neutron scattering sample environments in low-temperature, high-pressure, high-temperature and magnetic fields.  The section is responsible for operating user lab spaces and sample management.
