Deepika Patel

Deepika Patel (GSM’19–M’24, IEEE) received her B.E. degree in electrical engineering
from Rajasthan Technical University, India, in 2009, her M.Tech. degree in Power Systems
from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee in 2016, and her Ph.D. degree in
Power Systems from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 2024.


After completing her graduation, she began her professional career as an Assistant System
Engineer at Tata Consultancy Services in Chennai, India (2010–2011). She then served as a
Junior Engineer at a public utility company in the state of Rajasthan, India (2011–2013).
Transitioning to academia in 2016, she joined IFTM University, Moradabad, as an Assistant
Professor. From 2017 to 2019, she worked as an ad hoc faculty member at Sardar Vallabhbhai
National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, before enrolling in a Ph.D. program at the
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.


She joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN, USA, in September 2024 as an
R & D Assistant Staff Member. Her research interests include power system protection, microgrids,
inverter-based resources, inverter control, fault modelling of inverters, distribution networks,
power islands, and applications of machine learning in power systems.

    Sep 2024 – Present; Working on power system protection projects with a focus on high penetration of
    renewable energy in distribution networks.
  • Ad hoc Faculty- Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, India
    2017 – 2019; Taught various undergraduate courses including Power System Operation and
    Control, Network Analysis, Electrical Measurements, and Electrical Machines. Supervised laboratory sessions on power electronics applications in power systems and power system analysis.
  • Assistant Professor- IFTM University, Moradabad, India
    2016 – 2017; Taught various undergraduate courses including Power plant engineering and Electrical circuits. Supervised laboratory sessions on electrical machines and electrical measurements.
  • Junior Engineer- Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL), Rajasthan, India
    2011 – 2013; Worked as an operation engineer at the 2×250 MW Chhabra Thermal Power Station. Responsible for hot and cold boiler startups, unit synchronization, and turbine rolling.
