Bogdan Vacaliuc

Neutron Scattering Scientist, Reflectometry

Bogdan is a Computational Instrument Scientist for the Reflectometry instruments in the Large Scale Structures section.  His interests revolve around probing energy transfer mechanisms at the atomic and meso-scale, immediate visualization of experiments in the analytic domain and achieving concurrent analysis of simulation models and experiment progress.

Joining the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in August 2009 with a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University in 1992, his career spans across small and medium-sized companies building electronics, computing systems and software for commercial, industrial, and military uses.  Notable achievements in automated inspection, electrical fault detection, radar environment simulation, autonomous systems and high-speed data acquisition.

At ORNL, he has held positions in four directorates:  Energy and Environmental Sciences (Real-Time Systems, Electronic and Embedded Systems), Neutron Sciences (Instrument Data Acquisition, Reflectometry Neutron Scattering), Nuclear Sciences (Safeguards and Security Technologies) and National Security Sciences (Resilient Communications and Autonomous Systems).  Bogdan is passionate about computational machinery and using technology to help solve the world's challenges.  Bogdan and his wife Karen live in Harriman, Tennessee.  Their three children have begun their own lives in health care, computer science and the arts.  Amateur Radio Astronomy, Boating and Yard Maintenance are typically things on Bogdan's mind when he is not working or enjoying the company of his family and friends.
