NRC Projects Office

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulates the facilities and activities associated with the U.S. commercial nuclear fuel cycle, including the operation of nuclear power plants, production of nuclear fuel assemblies, and storage and transport of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste. Nuclear materials for medical or industrial purposes are also regulated by the NRC. In performing these activities, the NRC utilizes the technical resources (personnel, codes, facilities, etc.) of U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories, such as ORNL. The NRC relies on ORNL expertise in current and advanced reactor systems, storage and transport of SNF, instrumentation and controls, reactor physics, criticality safety, radiation transport, and material and environmental sciences. The NRC Projects Office is responsible for coordinating the effort between the NRC and ORNL to facilitate the ease of the endeavors undertaken by this partnership.

Mission:

Provide technical support to the NRC to assist them in ensuring the safe, secure and environmentally responsible use of radioactive materials in meeting U.S. energy, medical, industrial and academic needs.

Strategy:

Promote ORNL capabilities to NRC, identify NRC support opportunities for ORNL consideration, facilitate collaboration within ORNL and between ORNL and other national laboratories on NRC projects, and overview NRC-sponsored work at ORNL in accordance with technical and business requirements.
