November 6, 2007 — Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Team UT-Battelle has raised more than $12,000 for the Susan G. Komen Knoxville Race for the Cure.
The event is held annually in Knoxville to raise funds for breast cancer research. With 242 team members, Team UT-Battelle was awarded the 'Largest Corporate Team' award for the seventh year in a row and also won the award for the 'Largest Team Outside of Knox County.'
"Team UT-Battelle was well represented on race day," Team Captain Cathy Cheverton said. "We have a tradition for participation in this event, and we are proud of the strong involvement of our staff."
Team UT-Battelle's contribution to the local affiliate of the Komen Foundation included $6,580 in donations and more than $5,500 in registration fees, Cheverton said.
The local Komen Race for the Cure is now the area's largest charitable race and raises thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and education. UT-Battelle's amount this year goes towards a total that is estimated to reach approximately $400,000. Seventy-five percent of the money raised goes to causes in East Tennessee.
Nationwide, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has more than 75,000 volunteers working through 124 Komen Affiliates in U.S. communities, as well as three international affiliates in Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico.
Team UT-Battelle is a volunteer-service support concept. Its purpose is to help ORNL employees lend their services to community projects. UT-Battellle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy.
