Test of public warning sirens set for Wednesday, Sept. 22

The public warning sirens that are part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Public Warning System will be tested between 9 and 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

People in the areas surrounding the East Tennessee Technology Park, Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will hear a siren for several minutes during the morning.

Also as part of the test on Sept. 22, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency will activate the regional Emergency Alert System. A test message will be broadcast on several local radio and television stations.

The warning sirens are intended to provide immediate notification of an emergency to people who are outdoors within a two-mile radius of DOE's Oak Ridge sites. In the event of a real emergency, citizens should go inside, close all windows and ventilation systems, and listen to radio or television for more information.

Anyone who has questions about the siren tests is asked to contact the Lockheed Martin Public Affairs Office, 574-1642. For emergency information related to DOE sites, see the Southeast Directory's "Talking Telephone Book."
