People in the areas surrounding the East Tennessee Technology Park, Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will hear a siren for several minutes during the morning.
Also as part of the test on Sept. 22, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency will activate the regional Emergency Alert System. A test message will be broadcast on several local radio and television stations.
The warning sirens are intended to provide immediate notification of an emergency to people who are outdoors within a two-mile radius of DOE's Oak Ridge sites. In the event of a real emergency, citizens should go inside, close all windows and ventilation systems, and listen to radio or television for more information.
