ORNL's Green earns honor from minority engineering organization

Johney Boyd Green Jr., development engineer in the Engineering Technology Division of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has earned a Black Engineer of the Year Award in the category of Outstanding GEM Alumnus. GEM is the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science.

Green's work is in support of DOE's Office of Advanced Automotive Technologies in compression-ignition engines, spark-ignition engines, alternative fuels and systems applications. He also works on emissions controls.

Green joined ORNL in 1995. He spent a year as a visiting researcher at Ford's Scientific Research Laboratory in Dearborn, Mich. He earned a 1998 ORNL Technical Achievement Award for developing a process to improve combustion stability in internal combustion engines.

Green earned a bachelor's degree in 1992 in mechanical engineering from the University of Memphis and a master's degree in 1993 in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a candidate to receive a doctorate in mechanical engineering in December 2000 from Georgia Tech.

He and his wife, Tonya, are residents of West Knoxville.

ORNL is a DOE multiprogram research facility managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
