Hu, leader of the statistics and data analysis group in the Center for Transportation Analysis, is serving on the Department of Transportation's (DOT) expert panel on Aging Scenarios. This panel is part of the DOT Secretary's initiative to address the impact that trends in the older population will have on the U.S. transportation system. These trends include the increased number of older operators, postponed retirements and longer productive lives.
In recognition of her reputation in highway safety and transportation statistics, Hu has been appointed to the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal "Accident Analysis & Prevention."
Also, Hu will serve a three-year term on four committees of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), a unit of the National Research Council. As a committee member, she will identify national issues in transportation, make recommendations to policy makers, formulate research agendas and review papers.
Hu received her bachelor's and master's degrees in statistics from National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and the University of Guelph, Ontario, respectively. Before joining ORNL in 1982, she was a biostatistician at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Hu has received numerous merit awards during her career. In 1984, she was the co-recipient of the Pyke Johnson Award given by the TRB to the best transportation planning paper. Earlier this year, she was part of a team which received the 1995/96 Technical Publications Competition Merit Award from the Society for Technical Communication, East Tennessee Chapter, for a technical report, "1990 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey Databook."
Hu lives in Oak Ridge with her husband, Russell Lee, and two children, Ryan and Roddy.
