Both Chen and Warmack are group leaders with the Chemical and Biological Physics Section of the Health and Sciences Research Division.
Chen was recognized for his fundamental contributions to chemical kinetics studies and the development of several ultra-sensitive detection methods by laser spectroscopy. Warmack was recognized for his pioneering developments in scanning probe microscopes and applications to bio-species, especially in the mounting and routine imaging of DNA.
Chen, who joined ORNL in 1976, has received three R&D 100 Awards and the Health Sciences Division Annual Excellence in Research Award. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the National Taiwan University and his master's and doctorate in chemistry from the University of Chicago. He and his wife, Teresa, live with their two children, Nelson and Franklin, in Knoxville.
Warmack has been awarded an R&D 100 Award, several Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inventor's Awards and an International Hall of Fame Advanced Technology Award. He joined ORNL in 1978. Warmack earned his bachelor's degree in engineering physics and his doctorate in physics from the University of Tennessee.
He and his wife, Cynthia, live with their two daughters, Allison and Kathryn, and son, Andy, in Knoxville.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
