Shugart contributed a chapter on environmental genotoxicology for the second edition of "Aquatic Toxicology" by Taylor and Francis Publishers. Environmental genotoxicology is the scientific study of genetic material of living organisms damaged by chemicals and physical agents.
The other chapters, which are for new books to be published by CRC Press, Inc., are entitled "DNA Damage As A Biomarker" written for the book "Ecotoxicity and Human Health: A Hierarchal Approach" and "Application of the Alkaline Unwinding Assay to Detect DNA Strand Breaks In Aquatic Species" for the upcoming volume of "Techniques in Aquatic Toxicology."
These chapters were written at the request of the scientific editors of each of the books.
Shugart has been in his current position at ORNL since 1985. From 1967 to 1985, he was on the staff of ORNL's Biology Division.
He obtained a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University and his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Tennessee. Shugart also served as a line officer in the U.S. Navy.
Shugart and his wife, Shirley, reside in Knoxville.
