Mulholland will evaluate research being conducted by scientists from several universities, federal and state agencies to determine the nutrient concentration levels in water that can significantly alter the Everglades ecosystem.
The goal of this research is to provide the state with a scientific basis for setting a new standard for discharges of phosphorus in the Everglades.
Mulholland earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in environmental engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., before receiving his doctorate in environmental biology from the University of North Carolina.
Mulholland joined ORNL in 1979. His research topics include ecology of stream ecosystems, biogeochemistry and hydrology of watersheds and the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. Mulholland has published more than 70 related papers and reports.
Mulholland and his wife, Cathey Daniels, live in Oak Ridge with their children Anna, Rick and Joe.
