Dr. Theodore M. Besmann, a researcher at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been elected vice president of corporate and external affairs for the American Ceramic Society.
The American Ceramics Society is an international association dedicated to the dissemination of technical, scientific and educational information for those who have interests in the research, development and manufacturing of ceramics. Dr. Besmann will be inducted at the Society's annual business meeting in May in Cincinnati.
Dr. Besmann joined ORNL's Chemical Technology Division in 1975 and has served on the Program Planning and Analysis Office staff. Currently, he is a group leader for the Metals and Ceramics Division.
He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from New York University and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Iowa State University. He received his doctorate in nuclear engineering with a minor in solid state science from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Besmann is also a member of the Materials Research Society and the American Nuclear Society.
He and his wife, Wendy, and their two children, Anna and David, live in Knox County.
ORNL, one of the Department of Energy's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
