Miller is being recognized for his contributions to multiphoton ionization spectroscopy and nonlinear optics, which are utilized in the analysis and characterization of various types of materials.
He has received the R&D 100 Award and was selected as a NATO International Collaboration fellow. Miller has previously been named a fellow of the American Physical Society and of the Optical Society of America. He is a member of the American Chemical Society. Miller has edited four books and published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and conference proceedings.
Miller holds an elected position in the Laser Science Division of the American Physical Society and currently sits on the editorial boards of two journals - Physical Review Letters and The Journal of Physical Chemistry. He has served on the organizing and advisory committees of several national and international conferences . In particular, he established the conference series entitled the International Conference on Laser Ablation and chaired the first two meetings. Miller also serves on the National Research Council's standing Committee on Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences (CAMOS).
Miller earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1971 from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a doctorate in physical chemistry in 1975 from the University of Colorado.
He and his wife, Gray, live in Oak Ridge. They have a son, Marshall.
