The committee, consisting of nine prominent geoscientists from around the United States, is charged with the development of a plan that will prepare AGI for its leadership role in the earth sciences in the 21st century.
Founded in 1948, AGI provides information services to geoscientists, plays a major role in strengthening geoscience education and provides technical guidance on relevant issues of interest to Congress. The institute is a nonprofit federation of 27 separate geoscience organizations representing more than 85,000 geoscientists in the United States and abroad. One hundred fifteen colleges and universities are AGI academic associates, and 30 private companies are corporate members.
Stow has served on the AGI Executive Committee, the Education Committee, the Environmental Geosciences Advisory Committee, and was chairman of an AGI committee that prepared a technical paper on the role of the earth sciences in the National Institute for the Environment.
Stow received a bachelor's degree in geology from Vanderbilt University and both a master's degree and a doctorate in geochemistry from Rice University. He was a research scientist for Continental Oil Co. from 1966 to 1969 and a professor at the University of Alabama from 1969 to 1980, when he began work at ORNL.
Stow is a fellow and past secretary-treasurer of the Geological Society of America and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Society of Economic Geologists and the International Association of Hydrogeologists. He served as chairman of the town of Farragut's Hydrology Committee from 1985 to 1988.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
