The honor was awarded to Maziasz and 48 others at the Annual ASM Awards Dinner on Oct. 4, 1994 in Rosemont, Ill., in recognition of their distinguished contributions to the field of materials science and engineering. Fellows represent a broadly based forum of technical and professional leaders serving as advisors to ASM International. Maziasz received his recognition "for outstanding contributions to characterizing and understanding microstructural evolution in steels and intermetallic alloys during exposure to elevated temperatures or neutron irradiation, and development of alloys that resist property degradation."
Maziasz is currently a senior development engineer in the alloy behavior and design group in ORNL's materials science section of the Metals and Ceramics Division.
A native of Dearborn, Mich., he received a bachelor's degree in materials and metallurgical engineering in 1973 and a master's degree in nuclear engineering in 1974 from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was awarded his doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1984.
He and his wife, Veronica, live in Oak Ridge with their four children.
ORNL, one of the Department of Energy's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
