The talk, which is free and open to the public, will update residents of Oak Ridge and the surrounding area on ORNL's progress and challenges.
Mason's message will be his first public address to the Oak Ridge community since he became laboratory director on July 1.
His appointment as lab director follows a successful tenure since 2001 as Associate Lab Director for the Department of Energy's Spallation Neutron Source and, more recently, ORNL's Neutron Sciences Directorate.
As head of the SNS project, Mason led a consortium of six DOE labs in the design and construction of the $1.4 billion neutron accelerator. Completed on time, on budget and on scope, the SNS will restore American leadership in the field of neutron scattering and materials research.
In his talk Oct. 4, Mason will touch on recent good news at ORNL, including establishment of the new DOE BioEnergy Science Center, funding of the National Science Foundation proposal with the University of Tennessee, and other achievements.
