The society recognized her achievements in improving the use of computers for factory automation. Hylton pioneered an automated inventory control system that uses computer-integrated robotics to track factory inventories. Her work at ORNL has been in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, systems integration, ion beam milling and micro-manufacturing.
Hylton received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Tennessee Technological University and is currently pursuing a master's degree in engineering science and mechanics from the University of Tennessee.
She is a member of the Instrumentation Society of America, the Industrial Computing Society and the Society for Optical Engineering.
Hylton lives in Knoxville with her husband, Tom, and their daughter, Kristin.
