ORNL development engineer receives Rising Star Award

Kathy Hylton, development engineer in the Instrumentation and Controls Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), received the AEG/Modicon Rising Star Award from the Industrial Commuting Society at its annual conference and exhibition in Anaheim, Calif.

The society recognized her achievements in improving the use of computers for factory automation. Hylton pioneered an automated inventory control system that uses computer-integrated robotics to track factory inventories. Her work at ORNL has been in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, systems integration, ion beam milling and micro-manufacturing.

Hylton received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Tennessee Technological University and is currently pursuing a master's degree in engineering science and mechanics from the University of Tennessee.

She is a member of the Instrumentation Society of America, the Industrial Computing Society and the Society for Optical Engineering.

Hylton lives in Knoxville with her husband, Tom, and their daughter, Kristin.

You can learn more about this research and many other exciting projects by visiting ORNL on Oct. 21, 1995, during its Community Day event. Many of our facilities will be open to the public that day. For additional information, call ORNL Public Affairs, 865-574-4160.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
