The Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will host three one-week camps this summer for elementary and middle school students. They are:
* Science Explorers, June 12-16.
* RoboCamp June 26-30.
* SciCops, July 10-14. Science Explorers is designed for rising fifth, sixth and seventh graders and approaches a variety of science topics approached through field explorations and hands-on activities. Campers learn about insects, habitats, water, life, science, weather, rockets, geology, astronauts and robots. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Freels Bend Cabin in Oak Ridge.
RoboCamp is new to the camp schedule this year. It is targeted to rising sixth through eighth graders and focuses on robotics technology. Campers will explore robotics technology using a variety of educational robots. Campers are challenged to design, program, and build robots using the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Oak Ridge.
SciCops is for rising seventh through ninth graders, focusing on investigations in science, technology and law enforcement. Campers learn how science and technology are used in police investigations through the Knox County Sheriff's Department, ORNL and the Center for Science and Technology for Law Enforcement at the Y-12 Plant. Campers work with fingerprinting , radar, evidence analysis, scuba diving, arson investigation, forensic science, video enhancement, DNA analysis and the K-9 team operations. Sessions are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Knox County Sheriff's Department Training Facility in Knoxville.
Each camp is limited to 25 participants, and the cost is $160.
