The office will be responsible for providing leadership and for coordinating laboratory-wide activities in computing and networking, and for the development of new opportunities in both areas. The activities of the office also include strategic planning and information resources management coordination.
Hicks joined ORNL in 1972, and joined the Office of Computing and Network Management in 1989. He is a computational scientist who performed nonlinear fusion energy calculations from 1972 until the mid 1980s.
A native of Sarasota, Fla., Hicks received a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Florida State University and a doctorate in physics from the University of Illinois. He is a member of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society.
Hicks lives with his wife, Jane, and their four children in Oak Ridge.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
