Bohi will be located in ORNL's Washington, D.C., office as part of the Energy Division's Energy and Global Change Analysis Section. He holds a joint appointment with ORNL and Resources for the Future (RFF) in Washington, D.C., for which he is director of the Energy and Natural Resources Division. Previously, he was chief economist and director of the Office of Economic Policy for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Recently, Bohi played a major role in ORNL's work with the Commission of the European Communities to assess the external cost of electric power. That study addressed environmental and other costs that result from production and use of electricity. Much of his current research addresses the implications of restructuring the electric power sector, in particular the adoption of emissions trading and initiatives to make electric power more competitive.
He is best known for his work in energy and natural resources, especially in the areas of oil markets and energy security, energy demand modeling, and regulatory issues related to electric power.
Bohi has conducted research on the economic behavior of energy markets, the relationship between energy and the economy, and the regulation of natural gas and electricity industries. Recently, he has been involved in a similar set of topics in Russia and Ukraine.
During 1987-1988, Bohi was on leave from RFF to serve as chief economist and director of the Office of Economic Policy at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, where he was responsible for advising the commission on the economic matters related to the regulation of the natural gas and electricity industry. He headed the commission's effort to recommend changes in the regulation of electricity designed to make the industry more responsive to market forces, to substitute competitive forces for regulation where possible, and to reduce the economic costs of regulation.
Bohi served as the chairman of the department of economics at Southern Illinois University. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the Netherlands School of Economics in Rotterdam and a visiting professor at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Bohi received a bachelor's degree from Idaho State University and a doctorate from Washington State University.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
