TDE Sample Archives

Persons interested in developing proposals to utilize these samples are requested to contact Paul Hanson to obtain general information and possible redirection to other staff investigators.

Additional small samples from green canopy leaves,  leaf litter by species, bole sapwood and terminal branches are also available dried and ground.

Sample Set #TDE.1

  • 1993 SOILS - Pretreatment 
    Sample Type: Pretreatment soil samples were collected at 15 cm intervals to 90 cm depth (when possible) on an 8 x 8 m grid across the TDE experimental area (310 locations).  Only the central 49 locations per treatment plot are archived (i.e., rows 3 through 9 including the 7 centered positions).

    Year Collected: 1993 
    Next Scheduled Collection: February of 2005 
    Analyses: Planned analysis for C, N, and other elements planned for 2005 after 10+ years of experimental manipulation.

    Sample condition:  Air dried samples.  All samples have been prepared (i.e., homogenized) for analyses.

Sample Set #TDE.2

  • 1992 LITTER SAMPLES 
    Sample Type: Pretreatment litter collections were obtained from 49 positions per treatment block (i.e., rows 3 through 9 including the 7 centered positions). At each position litter was collected in a plastic basket with a collection area of 0.2 m2.

    Year Collected: 1992 
    Collections were made on Sept. 20, Oct. 1, Oct. 15, Oct. 28, Nov. 10, and Dec. 2.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf and non-leaf litter by basket location and date. The 1992 samples were not sorted by species.

    Sample Condition:  Coarse ground. A leaf litter sample  for each position have been saved (147 potential samples -- one missing). These ground samples included pooled materials from each sampling date.  Some twig samples have also been saved.

  • 1993 LITTER SAMPLES 
    Sample Type: Litter collections were obtained from 49 positions per treatment block (i.e., rows 3 through 9 including the 7 centered positions). At each position litter was collected in a plastic basket with a collection area of 0.2 m2.

    Year Collected: 1993 
    Collections were made on May 12, June 3, July 28, Sept 14, Oct 27, Nov. 9, and Dec. 1.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf and non-leaf litter by basket location and date. The 1993 samples were not sorted by species.

    Sample Condition: Fine ground. A leaf litter sample for each position have been saved (147 potential samples -- one missing at location 5-9; low sample quantity for locations 4-16 and 9-4) . These ground samples included pooled materials from the fall collections (Sept 14-Dec 1). A selection of twig samples have also been saved.

  • 1994 LITTER SAMPLES 
    Sample Type: Litter collections were obtained from 49 positions per treatment block (i.e., rows 3 through 9 including the 7 centered positions). At each position litter was collected in a plastic basket with a collection area of 0.2 m2.

    Collections were made on Apr 4, May 17, Aug 29, Sep 22, Oct 4, Oct 24, Nov 9, and Nov 30.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf and non-leaf litter by basket location and date. The species composition of the 1994 samples has also been estimated for the following: chestnut oak, white oak, other oaks, maples, yellow-poplar, Sourwood/blackgum, pine, misc. unidentifiable leaves and flowers etc., and twigs/acorns.

    Sample Type: Litter collections were obtained from 49 positions per treatment block (i.e., rows 3 through 9 including the 7 centered positions). At each position litter was collected in a plastic basket with a collection area of 0.2 m2.

    Collections were made on May 5. Aug 1, Sep 7, Oct 2, Oct 16, Nov 13 and Dec 15.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf, non-leaf litter, and acorn mass by basket location and grouped dates (May 5-Aug 1; Sep 7, Oct 2-16, and Nov 13-Dec15. The species composition of the 1995 samples has also been estimated for the following: chestnut oak, white oak, other oaks, maples, yellow-poplar, Sourwood/blackgum, pine, misc. unidentifiable leaves and flowers etc., twigs and acorns.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf, branch, and acorn, and spring flowers/seeds by basket location and date.  The species composition of the 1995 samples has also been estimated for the following: chestnut oak, white oak, other oaks, maples, yellow-poplar, Sourwood/blackgum, pine, misc. unidentifiable leaves and flowers etc., twigs and acorns.

    Collections were made on May 30, Sep 1, Oct 16, Nov 7, Nov 19, and Dec 20.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf, branch, and acorn, and spring flowers/seeds by basket location and date.

  • 2003 LITTER SAMPLES 
    Sample Type: Litter collections were obtained from 49 positions per treatment block (i.e., rows 3 through 9 including the 7 centered positions). At each position litter was collected in a plastic basket with a collection area of 0.2 m2.

    Year Collected: 2002 
    Collections were made on April 29, August 27, October 1, October 13, October 29, November 11, and December 15.

    Analyses: Total mass of leaf, branch, and acorn, and spring flowers/seeds by basket location and date.

    Sample Condition: Coarse ground. One leaf litter sample for each core position has been saved (Key positions for rows 3, 6, and 9 for 27 total samples). These ground samples included pooled materials from the fall collections (Oct 1 to Dec 15).

     

Sample Set #TDE.14

  • 1999 Oi and Oe/Oa Organic Layers 
    Sample Type: Collections of the standing crop of Oi and Oe/Oa layers at randomly distributed locations along 3 TDE transects corresponding roughly to rows 8 (upper), 5 (middle) and 3 (lower).  Collections were done in 0.25 m2 rings.

    Year Collected: 1999 
    Collections were made on February 8, 1999

    Analyses: Total organic mass of the Oi and Oe/Oa layer corrected for ash content.

    Sample Condition: Coarse ground. One sample for each position along the transects (n = 15 per transect for a total of 45 samples).  

Sample Set #TDE.15

  • 2002 Oi and Oe/Oa Organic Layers 
    Sample Type: Collections of the standing crop of Oi and Oe/Oa layers at randomly distributed locations along 3 TDE transects corresponding roughly to rows 8 (upper), 5 (middle) and 3 (lower).  Collections were done in 0.25 m2 rings.
