Abstract

This document describes conceptual design options and an operational description for a Remote Target Handling System (RTHS) for the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE). The LBNE project is managed by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL, Fermilab). The LBNE Target is expected to have an eight month life therefore requiring frequent replacement. To reduce facility downtime, a goal of replacing the Target within 1 day was set. However, Target replacement is complicated by the high levels of radioactivity released from three main sources: the Target, nearby equipment, and surrounding shielding. This high level of radioactivity forces the Target replacement process to be fully remote, and it was decided that a system which allowed target replacements without horn removal was preferred. Four conceptual design options for a Remote Target Handling System have been developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). These concepts are described and compared, and one concept is recommended which includes a frame that locates a target handling device in the beam chase. Operational details are provided as well as a cost estimate for the entire system.
