Description
Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed a one-pot process that converts polyethylene into liquid alkane products using a molten reaction medium that simultaneously functions as a catalyst and solvent. The system operates under neat conditions at relatively low temperatures and does not require external hydrogen sources, added solvents, or precious or transition metal catalysts.
The reaction environment provides highly active acidic sites within a stable, ionic medium that promotes controlled carbon–carbon bond rearrangement while suppressing excessive degradation. This enables the selective formation of liquid hydrocarbons across gasoline- and diesel-range fractions. The approach has demonstrated effectiveness not only for conventional polyethylene but also for more structurally robust and high-molecular-weight plastic materials, which are typically challenging to process using existing chemical recycling methods.
Spectroscopic and modeling studies indicate that the reaction proceeds through repeated transformation steps within the molten medium, allowing continuous conversion of polymer chains into smaller, stabilized hydrocarbon products. The simplicity of the system and its compatibility with commercially available materials make it attractive for industrial adaptation while maintaining process control and product selectivity.
