A Solid Conveyance with Single Phase Change Method for Cryogenic Extrusion Recirculation

Efficient fueling for magnetically confined fusion power systems requires continuous recirculation of cryogenic fuel material. This technology introduces a method for returning excess solid extrusion back into a cryogenic extruder without the need for large-scale gas reprocessing. By simplifying the recirculation process and maintaining consistent pressure, the invention improves system efficiency and reduces overall fusion plant fuel inventory requirements.

Description

Fusion fuel delivery systems depend on solid cryogenic pellets injected into plasma chambers to sustain energy-producing deuterium-tritium fusion reactions. Traditional pellet extrusion methods waste material during cutting of pellets and require complex reprocessing of unused fuel. This technology presents a solid conveyance system that enables continuous recirculation of excess extrusion material within cryogenic conditions. The system employs a mechanically driven conveyance mechanism and a controlled phase change process to manage pressure differences, maintain material integrity, and eliminate the need for separate gas-phase recovery. By integrating temperature and pressure control within the extrusion system, the method achieves smooth recirculation while conserving energy and minimizing fuel loss. This innovation enhances operational reliability and supports safer, more efficient fusion fueling systems.

Benefits

  • Enables continuous, energy-efficient recirculation of unused cryogenic fuel.
